Mission

The Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) is a national, non-profit organization, driven by Black organizations across the country. The Federation of Black Canadians advances the social, economic, political and cultural interests of Canadians of African descent.

The overarching mantra is that we are “Stronger Together” – Nothing about Us Without Us

Volunteer Options

Volunteers are a crucial aspect to the strength and success of the Federation and we provide a variety of ways to get involved.

1. Translator (12-15 hrs/month)

Expectations: 

  • Translate the documents in a reasonable amount of time and/or inform the coordinator if you are unable to complete the translation
  • Report to the volunteer coordinator (by email) about the status of the translation & the time spent working on the translation 

Skills: 

  • Attention to detail 
  • Bilingual (French and English)

2. Working Group Member (10-15 hrs/month)

Support Area: Research

Expectations:

  • Actively participate in working group meetings and provide ideas, feedback, and support
  • Participate in the research development of policy positions and advocacy strategies  
  • Support FBC’s advocacy initiatives by bringing awareness within your networks 

Skills: 

  • Professional or volunteer experience in any of  the following areas: media monitoring, collaboration, community engagement, professional writing, law, economics, public health, stewardship, communications & marketing, advocacy, politics, the Canadian African Diaspora
  • Align with the core values and mission of the FBC
  • Align with the code of conduct policy of the FBC
  • A passion for community development 

3. Research: Policy (10-15 hrs/month)

Expectations:

  • Provide research on statistics in areas including data on employment, healthcare, cases, or new items under priority areas.
  • Conducting main literature reviews on the three priority areas Economic Security, Criminal Justice Reform, and Community Building
  • Writing technical reports

Skills: 

  • Research, Use of excel, statistical software such as Stata, R, and coding ability
  • Ability to synthesis and analyze data from statistical software

4. Research: Resiliency Through COVID-19

Expectations

  • Article review of research articles related to the impact of COVID-19 on the Black community 
  • Report writing 
  • Transcribing 
  • Administrative assistance 

Skills 

  • Organizational skills 
  • Research skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication 
  • Punctuality and commitment to completing tasks

5. Communications and Marketing: Content Creator (10-12 hrs/month) 

Expectations: 

  • Support content creation for Social Media, including Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn
  • Create content as requested in a reasonable amount of time and/or inform the coordinator if you are unable to complete the request
  • Report to the coordinator (by email) about the status of the content & the time spent working on content creation

Skills 

  • Knowledge of social media 
  • Creative mind 
  • Experience using Canva

6. Engagement & Partnerships  (3 - 6 hrs/month)

Expectations: 

  • Host dynamic, informative and entertaining bilingual (French/English) program.
  • Be knowledgeable on one or more of the following: social, economic, political and cultural interests of Canadians of African descent.
  • Represent FBC as a talent on occasional remote broadcasts and outside events

Skills: 

  • Experience in a major radio market.
  • Excellent communicator in both French and English with strong on-air presence, presenting a genuine, informed and likable personality with the ability to create topical breaks that are clear and concise

7. Engagement & Partnerships  (5 hrs/week)

Expectations: 

  • Host dynamic, informative and entertaining bilingual (French/English) program.
  • Be knowledgeable on one or more of the following: social, economic, political and cultural interests of Canadians of African descent.
  • Represent FBC as a talent on occasional remote broadcasts and outside events

Skills: 

  • Experience in a major radio market.

8. Special Projects, Writing and Editing  (5 hrs/week)

Expectations: 

  • Host dynamic, informative and entertaining bilingual (French/English) program.
  • Be knowledgeable on one or more of the following: social, economic, political and cultural interests of Canadians of African descent.
  • Represent FBC as a talent on occasional remote broadcasts and outside events

Skills: 

  • Experience in a major radio market.
  • Excellent communicator in both French and English with strong on-air presence, presenting a genuine, informed and likeable personality with the ability to create topical breaks that are clear and concise

 

By Selecting to become an FBC Volunteer and completing this form the Federation agrees to:

  • Provide platforms to hear from you, listen to your viewpoints and concerns along with the broader community
  • Acknowledge your membership via a personal profile and provide updates and opportunities for dialogue 
  • Grant the individual status of General Membership (1-year term)
  • Grant access to invites for any town hall discussions and or events occurring in your region 

Community Membership Details:

By endorsing this form you are forthright a General Member (1-year re-newable term) of the Federation of Black Canadians and are therefore entitled to all of the membership privileges of General Membership including but not limited to:

  1. Receiving a membership online profile
  2. Receiving a quarterly newsletter
  3. Receiving any FBC surveys regarding (needs of the community, advocacy, events, news and follow-ups)
  4. Receive invites to any town hall discussions
